WILL A FORMATION CHANGE IMPROVE MILLWALL’S FORM?

BY KIERAN HILL

How we can beat Blackpool and get the fans back on the side of Gary Rowett!

As you may know, Millwall’s recent form has been nothing short of diabolical in recent games, with the Lions picking up just 3 points in their last 5 league matches, which is simply not good enough if we are aspiring to end the season anywhere near those seemingly implausible playoffs.

One issue in which fans were quick to criticise when Rowett first took the reigns over the South London club was the negative style of football in which we played, with us quickly becoming one of the most boring teams in the league, and the issue of being “boring” was never as much of a problem as it is now, as we always used to have a solid defence behind us, however this season, we’ve been struggling to both find the net and to stop the ball going into our own net.

Instant changes are imperative. Starting with a need to change formation.

Without injuries, I wholeheartedly believe that our best XI would be in the 4-3-3 formation, where two out of the three in midfield would sit just in front of the defence which would allow a “number 10” figure to be the main playmaker in midfield. Seeing as he is our record signing and got more goal contributions in the Eredivisie than Manchester United’s 100-million-man Antony, it makes perfect sense to have Zian Flemming in the 10 role, as I feel this system would allow him to flourish.

It goes without saying that Bartosz Bialkowski should remain our starting goalkeeper. As for the issue regarding the back four, my ideal back four from right to left would be: Ryan Leonard, Jake Cooper, Charlie Cresswell, and Callum Styles. Whilst this may seem risky seeing as Leonard and Styles are not by trade full backs, I feel that so far this season they have been a lot better defensively than Danny McNamara and Scott Malone, so this role would suit them better. In an ideal world, we would sign a left back in January to allow Styles to play as a central midfielder in this system, but until that happens, I feel he would be more than competent filling in at left back.

In the midfield three, this needs to be where the bulk our creativity comes from, however the Lions need a “dog” to carry out defensive duties sitting in front of the defence, look no further than Billy Mitchell. Whilst his football style may not be as attractive as some, I feel he is an essential member of the team as his defensive capabilities are fantastic, and if Millwall do switch to a 4 back system, we need players in the midfield to be able to defend as well as be creative. However, the main man feeding Flemming needs to be George Saville, as he is one of the best Millwall players at getting the ball from defence into attack, I feel that the partnership of Saville and Mitchell could work wonders in a 4-3-3 system. With Zian Flemming in the number 10 role, that would be my ideal midfield.

The front three is simple: Tyler Burey, Tom Bradshaw, Andreas Voglsammer. With Afobe not quite delivering the goods so far this season, I think we would be best off with this front three up top instead. With Burey on the left, and Voglsammer on the right (but interchanging) this would allow us to have three players on the pitch at one time who know how to put the goal in the onion bag, and with Flemming being unchained in this system, I feel we could cause some Championship defence’s some serious problems!

PREVIEW: MILLWALL VS BLACKPOOL

Millwall take on Blackpool on Saturday afternoon in their next Sky Bet Championship match.

The Lions will be looking to bounce back after a 2-0 defeat against QPR in midweek which condemned Millwall to their fourth defeat in five games.

The visitors also lost in the week, losing 3-0 against Rotherham at The New York Stadium.

The last time the two sides met Blackpool beat the South London club at Bloomfield Road back in January of this year.

But it was Millwall who triumphed at The Den earlier last season, goals from Jake Cooper and Jed Wallace gave the Lions their first win of the 2021-22 campaign.

There looks to be no new injury concerns after the midweek defeat but Gary Rowett may look to change it up after that reverse.

PREVIEW: MILLWALL VS QPR

Millwall take on Queens Park Rangers at The Den on Wednesday evening in the Sky Bet Championship.

All EFL matches were postponed last weekend as a mark of respect for Queen Elizabeth II – who sadly passed away at the age of 96 on Thursday.

The Lions beat Cardiff City 2-0 last time out – goals from Charlie Cresswell and Benik Afobe securing Millwall’s third home win of the season.

The R’s were beaten against Swansea City in their last match – a 1-0 defeat condemning Michael Beale’s side to their first defeat in three.

The last time the two sides met Millwall triumphed, beating QPR 2-0 in South London as Tyler Burey and Mason Bennett gave the Lions all three points.

Millwall boast an impressive home record – winning three of the four there this season and had the third best in the league last season – only Bournemouth and Fulham bettering them.

The EFL released this statement: “Further to discussions on Friday morning it has been determined that all EFL fixtures from 9-10 September will be postponed as a mark of respect by the National Sport to the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

“This is aligned with the approach that the Premier League and the FA will take with their competitions this weekend.

“Further information, in respect of how football, Clubs and their supporters will commemorate Her Majesty’s reign will be confirmed at an appropriate point.

“Details regarding rearranged games will be announced in due course.”

PREVIEW: SUNDERLAND VS MILLWALL

Millwall head to the Stadium Of Light on Saturday afternoon to face Sunderland.

The Lions beat Cardiff City 2-0 in their last Championship match – Charlie Cresswell and Benik Afobe getting the goals.

The Black Cats lost 1-0 at The Riverside Stadium against rivals Middlesbrough on Monday night – to leave them eighth in the second tier of English football.

Here we get a Sunderland perspective from Dan from the A Love Supreme – which is a Sunderland Fanzine ahead of the match:

How do you expect it to go for your club this season?

Before a ball was kicked, I would have been happy with SAFC avoiding a relegation scrap. But we’ve started really well and, prior to Ross Stewart’s Grade Three thigh injury, I was hoping to solidify in mid-table and perhaps make an outside push for the play-offs. But, since Stewart will miss a chunk of the season now, I would be perfectly happy with a no-drama season of mediocrity!

Do you have the right manager?

Like every Sunderland fan, I would have much preferred Alex Neil to stay. But Tony Mowbray has spoken really well so far and seems to ‘get’ the fans and the region. I don’t expect him to pull up any trees with Sunderland but I would expect him to keep us afloat and steady the ship after a turbulent few weeks following Neil’s exit.

How’s your transfer business?

The quality of players signed has been good, but squad depth is a massive issue. It’s been highlighted by Stewart’s injury – we like to play a two-striker formation but Ellis Simms at 21 years old is now our only fit natural striker! Edouard Michut is a wonderkid from PSG, and we’ve signed 18-year-old Costa Rica international Jewison Bennette, but Mowbray has already asked for patience as they are given time to bed in. We seem to be refusing to sign anyone over the age of 24, which is a good business model but sometimes you need to break that self-imposed restriction for the betterment of the squad.

Who do we need to watch out for and why?

I would have said Ross Stewart, as he’s arguably one of the best strikers in the Championship. But Ellis Simms will be expected to start every game up front, and is a big lad with a decent touch and eye for goal. Alex Pritchard is the creative force playing behind the striker, while on his day Jack Clarke is really dangerous on the left hand side too.

What formation and style of play do you play?

Alex Neil deployed a 5-2-1-2 system, with wingers Jack Clarke and Lynden Gooch playing as attack-minded wingbacks. Tony Mowbray kept the exact same formation when he came in, although I reckon he’ll move to his more favoured 4-2-3-1 and move Clarke further forward in order to give Simms some support as a lone striker.

What are your fans like and what do they expect of the players?

The fans are so passionate and always sell out the away end, as well as bringing a massive home crowd for the Championship. If we start well on Saturday it will be a really hard game for you guy to come from behind. We expect players to give 100% week in week out as a bare minimumm, and luckily now we have a likeable squad that seem to understand the fans’ expectations.

How do you think the game will go and a prediction for the result?

I reckon we’ll go 2-0 up, but you’ll claw back a late consolation goal to finish 2-1. George Honeyman is guaranteed to score if he plays, a boyhood SAFC fan from the North East and was once our captain in League One. Alex Pritchard and Jack Clarke to score for us in the absence of the obvious choice Ross Stewart.

MILLWALL UNDER-21’S WIN AGAIN

Millwall Under-21’s defeated Coventry City to make it five wins in a row.

The young Lions went behind early on but came back fighting and nearly levelled before half-time when Abdul Abdulmalik fired just wide.

But just five minutes after the restart they were level when Abdulmalik found the back of the net.

With twenty minutes to go once again Abdulmalik was the hero when he grabbed his second and Millwall’s second to turn the game on it’s head.

The Sky Blues equalised with nine minutes remaining as Millwall must’ve thought they would be leaving with a point.

With one minute remaining of the ninety, Kyle Smith struck to give the South London club all three points and their fifth win in a row – in what has been a superb start to their 2022/23 campaign.

PREVIEW: MILLWALL VS CARDIFF CITY

Millwall host Cardiff City at The Den on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions will be looking to get back to winning ways after three defeats on the trot – the most recent a 2-0 loss against Burnley on Tuesday evening.

The visitors were defeated 2-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium against Luton Town in midweek.

The clash between the two sides will see Mahlon Romeo and Sheyi Ojo return to SE16, the latter a loanee last season from Liverpool.

But the big return is in the form of Steve Morison. The former Lions striker scored 92 goals in 336 appearances for Millwall over three separate stints.

In February, Morison tasted defeat as Bluebirds manager at The Den – as Millwall beat his side 2-1, Murray Wallace and Mason Bennett with the goals.

Millwall will be without Ryan Leonard and Mason Bennett as the duo continue their recoveries from their respective injuries.

But Deadline Day signing Callum Styles is available after completing a loan switch from Barnsley.

MILLWALL MAKE CALLUM STYLES THEIR EIGHTH AND FINAL SIGNING

Millwall have completed the signing of Callum Styles on a season-long loan deal from Barnsley.

The Lions reportedly beat clubs such as Blackburn Rovers, Hull City, Stoke City and Sheffield United to capture the deal for the 22-year-old.

The left-wing back – who can also operate in the midfield – penned a new deal with the Yorkshire side before departing for The Den.

This would most likely have been to ensure they protect themselves next summer if Styles was to move to another club permanently.

Richard Cawley of the South London Press has reported that the South London club have an option to buy Styles at the end of his loan spell in SE16.

Styles is available for selection for Saturday’s match against Cardiff City after signing before the cut off point.
