Report: Burnley 2 Millwall 0 – Third straight defeat for The Lions

Burnley handed Millwall a third straight league defeat as they were beaten 2-0 at Turf Moor.

Second-half goals from Vitnho and Jay Rodriguez secured the hosts’ first home win of the season after three draws on their patch.

The defeat extended Millwall’s winless run to ten away from home.

Zian Flemming and Andreas Voglsammer were both handed full debuts as part of three changes made to the side that lost 1-0 at home to Reading last Saturday. Charlie Cresswell was the third change.

Vincent Kompany’s side came close early on, former Charlton man Joann Berg Gudmundsson firing a shot into the side netting. Bart Bialkowski was forced into a save from Nathan Tella’s shot on 12 minutes.

We nearly got to see a stunning debut goal from Flemming, but Arijanet Muric used his full frame to keep out the Dutchman’s effort. Bialkowski then had to prevent Josh Brownhill’s free kick from flying into the net.

Into the second half, Tom Bradshaw set through Flemming, but Muric denied him.

Cresswell hit the post after Jake Cooper’s header back into the box fell to his defensive partner, but the post denied him a third goal of the season.

Burnley took the lead just after the hour mark. Benson’s cross was headed in at the back post by Vitnho. They doubled their lead in the 72nd minute. Bialkowski parried Brownhill’s shot straight into the path of Rodriguez, who reacted quickest to make it 2-0.

Benik Afobe missed a great chance to halve the deficit but failed to get on the end of Cooper’s knockdown.

It means the Lions have now lost their last three games without scoring.

PREVIEW: BURNLEY VS MILLWALL

Millwall travel to Turf Moor this evening to take on Burnley in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Lions come into the fixture on the back of a 1-0 defeat at The Den against Reading on Saturday.

But the Clarets come into the game after a 5-1 victory against Wigan Athletic, their biggest win of the season so far.

Matt from @NoNayNever gives us his views on Burnley:

How do you expect it to go for your club this season?

Before the season started, having changed manager and most of the starting 11, we were struggling to predict how this season would go. We were hoping that we would be in and around the play off places, and maybe even the top 2, but we also were prepared for a longer transition period as the team took time to gel and Kompany’s systems began to bear fruit. Now we are 6 games in, most Clarets are settling into a more positive frame of mind; they can see the potential in the team and maybe one or two more additions either this week or in January, along with the team working better together with each match could see us challenging for promotion come the Spring.

Do you have the right manager?

Personally, I was very happy with the appointment of Vincent Kompany. After the departure of Sean Dyche, I was really hoping the new owners would be brave and look further afield for a younger, more adventurous manager, rather than picking one of the endless managerial merry-go-round of English clubs. Early indications show that whilst he may still have plenty to learn about the Championship, his long term vision and plan seems to be the right one and, more importantly, he is attracting exciting young players from across Europe, something Dyche struggled to do.

How’s your transfer business?

Well, with many departures this summer we were always going to need to recruit a good number and I think at last count we were on 13, including 3 loans. The squad is almost unrecognisable, however after years of under-investment and allowing players to run down contracts, this was always going to happen. As I’ve already mentioned, the squad is clearly needing time to blend and start to look like a team, but on Saturday at Wigan we saw just how good that could be if we can keep key players fit.

Key Player who do we need to watch out for and why?

So far this season there have been a few stand out players. Before his red card against Blackpool, Ian Maatsen had barely put a foot wrong, surging forward from his left back role and adding some much needed urgency to the attack; Josh Cullen has come into midfield and been marshalling almost every minute of every game & Josh Brownhill has seemed to have found his level and his best role in a central attacking midfielder.

What formation and style of play do you play?

So we have settled into a 4-2-3-1 after getting a few more bodies in since the season began. The left back has licence to get forward when we are in possession with the defence shuffling into a back 3, protected by Cork and Cullen in defensive midfield roles. Kompany likes us to play out from the back which has led to some hairy moments with our new keeper Muric, brought in from City, but recent matches have shown he is learning to send it longer when needed. We have enjoyed a lot of possession in the early games, but until the last 2, had very little to show for it in the way of goals. Hopefully that blockage has now cleared and Kompany’s plan to share out the goals will come good.

What are your fans like and what do they expect of the players?

We have a mix of traditional, old school fans who will have struggled with all the changes this summer has brought and the new style of play, but they are the minority and are out-weighed by the rest of us who were ready for a refresh / reset and are enjoying this young, exciting squad.

How do you think the game will go and a prediction for the result?

After Saturday’s emphatic 5-1 win, the confidence will be high and with this match coming so soon after, the squad should be able to carry that into Tuesday, backed by hopefully another full house at the Turf who will be bouncing and right behind the team after the weekend. I imagine the starting 11 will be the same and they will approach the game in the same manner to take the game to Millwall and look to get ahead sooner rather than later and then manage the match through to the end.

REPORT: MILLWALL 0-1 READING

Millwall lost 1-0 against Reading at The Den on Saturday afternoon.

Naby Sarr’s 14th minute header gave the Royals all three points and ended the Lions five match winning run in SE16.

Millwall started the better and had an early chance when Tom Bradshaw’s header was saved by Joe Lumley.

But soon after Reading took the lead, Jeff Hendrick’s corner found Sarr who powered home at the back post.

Millwall thought they had equalised twenty minutes from time but Benik Afobe’s goal was ruled out for offside.

Reading had opportunities to make the game more comfortable for themselves when Jeff Hendrick was put through but Bart pulled off a great save.

Then Shane Long had a chance, one on one with the Lions stopper but hit just wide of the post.

Reading saw the game out and took all three points from South London.

PREVIEW: MILLWALL VS READING

BY KIERAN HILL

On Saturday, Millwall face the stern test of playing Reading at the Den. Reading have had a mixed bag of results to begin the season, not unlike the Lions! However, the Royals have managed to achieve nine points from their opening five fixtures, whilst Millwall are on seven, which means that Saturday’s encounter gives the Lions the chance to leapfrog Reading!
Reading’s last 5 fixtures (in all comps) WLLWW
Millwall are unbeaten in their last five encounters with the Royals, managing to get four wins in that time too!

It is thought that Millwall will go into the game playing their standard 3-5-2 formation, in which the wing backs are classed as part of the midfield five.

Danny McNamara will be expected to start this weekend despite a difficult start to his campaign, however there are still question marks about who will play of the left hand side, with some Millwall fans actively speaking against Scott Malone after he’s struggled in the last few games for the Lions!

Reading have had a lot of fortune since switching in the last couple of games to a 3-5-2 formation, with Holmes, Hutchinson and Mcintyre playing as a back 3 whilst Hoilett and Yiadom have now pushed up and act as part of the Reading midfield.

Whilst speaking to Reading fans @ElmParkRoyals and @readingfanman, they were feeling moderately confident going into the game despite their poor record in recent years against the Lions, however there is still worry from within the Reading fanbase.

When asked about how they believe the Royals will do this season they said that they “Fully expect despite the strong start for us to still be in the relegation battle at the end of the season – can’t get ahead of ourselves despite the 3 wins from the first 5, this season is still all just about survival.”

Reading are currently managed by former Manchester United and Liverpool player Paul Ince, of whom I am sure the Lions faithful will be quick to remind about his spell at West Ham in the early stages of his career.

When asked about the manager and whether they felt he was the right man for the job, the fans’ response was a clear answer, saying that “Currently – I think so (about having the right gaffer). If we can continue the defensive siege style football, we should have enough about us to go and win points this season as shown by the home wins. As long as this continues, and he doesn’t let a losing momentum kick in, it’s tough to argue that anyone could be doing a much better job this season yet.”

This summer was key for the Royals, seeing as it was imperative for them to improve from last season, as they were on record the worst team to ever stay up from the Championship. When asked about their transfer business, Reading fans were confident, saying there have been “Lots of ins and outs! Bringing in a whole new central midfield this summer has really helped though. Hendrick and Loum have added much needed “steel” to the midfield. Whilst Tom Ince has added a lot of hard work in the final third. Losing so many players from last season was always expected – and the longer we go through the season, the less they will be missed if we continue to pick up points after what has been probably one of the worst 5 years supporting the club.”

The rest of the Q and A with the Reading fans went as follows:

Key Player

Key player will probably be Tom Ince, if he is able to create, we will hopefully be able to nab a goal. The guy has lungs bigger than my back yard, seems to be able to run for days.

Also need to watch out for Loum in central midfield who will be involved in winning a lot of the ball back and playing it forward to the 2 “strikers” in Long and Ince.

What formation and style of play do you play?

We have adapted to a 5-3-2 style recently with high wing backs, playing fairly direct fast football. We have had very low possession stats and will be more than happy to play in a very low block on the counter.

What are your fans like and what do they expect of the players?

Our fans have sold around 1300 for the game, and are in fairly optimistic mood having won the last 2 after the aberration of Rotherham away. Will expect the players to look to play hold up football, and basically be prepared to put in blocks, and tackles late on when needed.

How do you think the game will go and a prediction for the result?

Think Millwall will probably hold a lot of the ball, with Reading playing in a low block and then attempting to hit them on the counter. If Reading can pick up the first goal, who knows! I do think it’ll be a close game though either way and would be surprised if either side run away with this one.

REPORT: NORWICH CITY 2-0 MILLWALL

Millwall fell to a 2-0 defeat against Norwich City at Carrow Road on Friday evening.

The Lions were unlucky in moments that could’ve quite easily have fallen for them.

Millwall started well and had the first chance when George Honeyman headed over from Tyler Burey’s cross.

The hosts were having plenty of the ball but struggled to create any clear cut chances in the first 45.

But they got the opener soon after the restart, Josh Sargent placed it past Bartosz Bialkowski to give the Canaries the lead.

It was two when Scott Malone – who looked like he was fouled – lost the ball to Onel Hernandez who squared it to Sargent for a second.

The Lions were unlucky not to get a goal back when Andreas Voglslammer’s strike cannoned into the bar before Benik Afobe hit over from the resulting corner.

Millwall play Reading next up at The Den next Saturday.

PREVIEW: NORWICH CITY VS MILLWALL

BY OLLY TOMLIN

Millwall take on Norwich City on Friday evening at Carrow Road and will be looking to get their third win of the Championship campaign.

The Lions dramatically scored two goals in injury time against Swansea City to salvage a late point in South Wales on Tuesday night.

One of the players that Millwall will need to look to limit the threat of is Marcelino Nunez who is one of their best players. Being very highly rated at the Canaries and scoring a well taken goal against Hull City last weekend.

Norwich City have been very disappointing at the start of this season and Millwall need to capitalise on this opportunity away from home against a very capable team.

Norwich City form so far this season has been L/D/L/W in the championship.

Millwall are bouncing off the back of a draw against Swansea City playing a 5-3-2 formation where we didn’t look like a side that was capable of play-offs.

My prediction for this game will be a 1-1 draw
I hope to see Rowett play a 5-2-1-2 formation so that Millwall can create more chances after a disappointing game against Swansea where we only had 1 shot.

Here’s what a Norwich City fan has had to say about their hopes for their fixture against Millwall:

Do you have the right Manager?

The Jury is still out on this one. I personally like Smith and feel that he is more versatile than Farke was previously, however I still feel he needs to act a little quicker with his substitutions when trying to turn things around in a match.

How’s your transfer business?

There have been some positive signings so far, but we still haven’t addressed the need for an additional striker to take the burden off from Pukki. Hugill had a great pre-season so it would seem that he is going to get a proper chance to be a useful team member this season.

Key Player?

Max Aarons. Whilst there is still speculation that he might leave, there have been no material bids for him and he is certainly our most valuable player. Whether he will remain our player beyond the transfer window remains to be seen.

Who do we need to watch out for and why?

Marcelino Nunez. An exciting signing from Chile. Although he has only just joined the team he has looked very promising going forward and has already registered his first goal for us and been one of the few players to really shine so far this season.

What formation and style of play do you play?

Smith likes to play a 4-3-3 formation. Whilst I believe he can mix it up this is definitely his preferred style.

What are your fans like and what do they expect of the players?

There is always a high expectation from Norwich for us to be fun to watch but also be competitive on the pitch. The last few seasons have given more weight of expectation at Championship level however I think this has been tempered of late and there are quite a number of fans feeling that this season is going to be a real struggle for us.

How do you think the game will go and a prediction for the result?

I think now is a great time to play Norwich. We have started poorly as we often do, but there still feels that the club is in flux and the team is being rebuilt. Norwich have shown defensive frailty time and time again and so there will definitely be chances for Millwall. Prediction is a 1-1 draw.

THANKS TO NORWICH CITY FAN STEVE CAUWE FOR HIS ANSWERS.

DÉJÀ VU FOR MILLWALL AS THEY ONCE AGAIN FIGHTBACK

AND BREATHE……

Millwall came from two goals down to gain a point against Swansea City at the Swansea.Com stadium.

The Swans started strong and opened the scoring in the first minute when Ryan Manning drilled past Bartosz Bialkowski.

Jamie Shackleton nearly levelled when his strike cannoned off the top corner after he struck it so sweetly.

Ten minutes later it was two, Michael Obafemi twisted and turned and gave himself room for a shot which flew into the bottom corner.

Millwall struggled to gain any momentum in the second half but should’ve been awarded a penalty when Ben Cabango handled in the box, but Gavin Ward opted not to award the Lions a spot-kick.

Andreas Voglsammer came on with fifteen minutes to go and nearly scored on his debut when his deft chip hit the bar.

But Millwall don’t know when they’re beaten and in the third minute of stoppage time they pulled one back when Nathan Wood turned into his own net.

Then, with the last kick of the game Scott Malone’s delivery was met at the back post by Kyle Naughton with Tyler Burey breathing down his neck to salvage a late, late point for Millwall.

PREVIEW: SWANSEA CITY VS MILLWALL

Millwall head to the Swansea.Com stadium this evening to face Swansea City in their second away match of the season.

The Lions got their second win on the board on the weekend as they beat Coventry City 3-2 at The Den.

The South London club came from two goals down to dramatically turn the game on it’s head to beat the Sky Blues.

The Swans also recorded a victory last time out as they beat Blackpool 1-0 at Bloomfield Road – Oliver Ntcham’s late strike giving them all three points.

Millwall will be without Mason Bennett, Zian Flemming and Tom Bradshaw for the trip to Wales – the former suffering an injury against Coventry.
