Millwall defeated Colchester United 1-0 at the JobServe Community Stadium on Friday.
The Lions set up in a 5-2-1-2 formation with Mason Bennett partnering Benik Afobe whilst George Saville and Billy Mitchell were the midfield pairing.
Millwall started the stronger and went close when Ryan Leonard hit just wide in the opening stages of the game – but couldn’t direct his effort on target from a tight angle.
Following this, the game went quiet with both teams struggling to gain any momentum in the midfield – whilst the Lions continued to try and press.
It would take until the 45th minute for a real chance and it was taken by Jake Cooper when Ryan Leonard’s long-throw was met by the head of the centre-back and looped over the Colchester goalkeeper.
That was how the game stayed but could have been in danger if not for a wonderful George Long double save to deny the hosts an equaliser.
Next up for Millwall is Hammarby at The Den on Wednesday evening in the “Huski Derby” and it will be the first time the South London club have played at home since the end of April – when they beat Peterborough 3-0.
